Where are you? Most community colleges or junior colleges offer journalism or communication courses, but as I 've said before having a degree in journalism or communication doesn't always guarentee a job as a writer.

Learn about politics, economics, sciences, psychology, sociology, ethics, philosophy, geography, history, business because sure as shootin an editor will assign you a story you don't always know anything about or he/she will expect you to come up with stories that aren't always in your area of expertise. You may be foreced to cover schoolboard or hopsital board meetings and asked to report on that.

The key to being a good writer is to write and write and write. You can take journalism classes in high school, you might even find a newspaper to intern with over the summers. But writers write about not only the things they know about , many other things as well and having a well rounded education never hurts.

I'm actually a student @ St. Bonaventure University (near Olean, NY) and I've heard that this is one of the best places for journalism. Some people who graduated from here include: Oprah Winfrey, Neil Cavuto from Fox news, and a few writers from the NY Times. It's one of the best colleges around for journalism, as far as I know. Hope this answered your question!

Step one, check out the state schools. They obviously can offer big discounts over private schools like Syracuse and Northwestern.

Step two, consider the community college route. Freshman English is freshman English to a certain degree. You probably can save money by spending two years at a junior college, and then moving along.

Step three, try to get internships along the way. The good thing about journalism/writing is that talent trumps all. If you are good, people will find you. So find outlets for your work, and give it a shot.

Good luck.

Don't know where you are located, but in Ohio, Ohio University's Scripps School of Journalism is one of the top schools in the country for journalism. Kent State isn't bad either. Other top national programs that I'm aware of are Columbia and Northwestern. But a lot of schools have good programs. I went to a small college and one of my J-school profs was a Pulitzer Prize winner, which he won as editor for a small town paper during the Civil Rights movement. So check out the faculty resumes at a school you are interested in. Find schools with profs that have real world experience and aren't just academics.

I went to the University of Maryland, and they have a great program. It's VERY hands-on. A lot of colleges are about theory. University of Maryland is about doing. They have great connections with the Washington Post (some grad courses are taught there), have an excellent student newspaper and station (you even get paid) and they work super hard to get you a job when you graduate. And they have a lot of fellowships.
