i was just wondering how cautious i have to be -- i'm paranoid with leaky batteries -- don't even really know how to tell if they leaked. how to differentiate between dust and leakage?

the clock the battery is in works. but the battery expired 6 years ago...

YOu probobly wouldn't want to use leaky batteries, because they cause blisters and can mess up electronics.

The leak is a week acid so clean it up with a little baking soda and water ,that neutralizes the acid to a salt.

No, they won't be fully functional. but they probably wouldn;t injure you if you used them, so there;s nothing to be worried about. I think leakage would really be clear from dust.
