That'll depend on how far you want to go. You can pay a private security firm several thousand dollars to hook you up with alarms and intrusion detectors that are monitored electronically 24/7 or you can do it yourself for a reasonable cost.
You'd need sensors on windows and doors (burglar alarms) to detect someone trying to get them open. You'd also want someone to come in and trim all shrubbery near your house so that it can't be used as a hiding place for someone trying to break in through a basement window. That might be enough. Or you could add a device that automatically dials 9/11 and asks for a police officer to check your property. You could go a step further and buy several miniature t.v. cameras to position around your house that will send pictures of various areas around your house to t.v. monitors inside. You can equip that system with a recorder that begins to tape what the cameras see the moment a burglar alarm goes off.
Or you could get a couple of dogs and attend a training program with them to teach the dogs how to protect you and your home and train you how to direct and control the dogs.
Doing it yourself this way will cost at a minimum about five hundred dollars - it could go as high as two thousand dollars. Using dogs - and two of them are much more valuable than one by itsself - could cost you a six hundred to a thousand dollars for each dog plus another thousand to two thousand for training for you and the dogs - and you WOULD need the schooling for you as well as for them.
Hope this helps.

100 to 100,000.
It will all depend on the service you want. It will be based on the number and type of sensors that you want or need. Whether it is monitored or not. Cameras or not.
There are just too many variables to consider.
Call an alarm company to come out and talk with you and get an idea of what you are talking about. Do get several companies in and give yo uestimates.
ADT is probably the most famous one. They may be the most expensive too. I have heard of some small companies that would install the system free, provided you have it monitored by them for a monthly fee. The monthly fees are where they make their money. It adds up.
Assuming you have a normal sized house and normal requirements for safety, I would guess somewhere between 1 and 2 thousand dollars for installation and equipment. Good luck

Having it professionally installed is safest and most effective for when you are not home. Competition is severe with alarm companies, so shop around. It may seem like you save money but most companies install equipment that they continue to own. If you cancel they come get their stuff back. Wireless equipment is available at home improvement stores and you can buy as much stuff as you need. Some can be quite pricey and others are very affordable. If you hire a company they will want you to sign a contract. READ IT CAREFULLY!
