Absolutely. There are scamming companies out there for sure. My son once downloaded a free virus check. My computer crashed! The guy who fixed it said it was put in by the spyware "company." Kind of like blackmailing you to buy the software so the first virus they fix is the one they put on your computer when you downloaded the test. If you don't buy it, slam!
Be careful. Get free products from LavaSoft or google updater. Or buy trusted programs and install them.

Hi there;
I must say that this thought has never crossed by mind!! Lol
Well let me tell you my opinion but I have to warn you that this is just based on a normal 16 year old high school girl who doesn't know much about computers (I mean I am good at using it and all but I'm that doesn't mean I know what each and every part of it does!)
Hmmm, your saying does have a point there and there must be some sort of truth but I really don't think that every company does that. Some? then its completely true. But you must also know that there are some people out there who just make those viruses because they think its fun, have nothing better to do, to prove something or whatever else is going through their minds.
I know some classmates who can actually make a virus and send it to someone just because they don't like them. Will they gain money from that? Not that I know of....
Anyways, I just wanted to tell you that there might have been some truth in what you have said but you could not overlook the fact that some people are just evil and would like to cause others some trouble just because they have nothing better to do (or in some cases because they hate them!)

Some of the companies that have been producing anti-spyware have been busted for producing spyware then offering the solution for it.
Other people have been sent to prison for purely creating viruses and doing it maliciously, not for any financial gain. So while your statement is true, there are many cases in which it is not.

Your idea that the anti-malware vendors produce viruses and other malware to create customers for there products in one of the oldest "urban legends" in existence. An old "wives-tale" if you will!
I suppose that you also believe that Doctors create diseases so they can charge people to cure them?
I suppose that you also believe that Tow Truck Drivers create car accidents so that they can charge people to tow the wreak away?
I suppose that you also believe that Fire-Fighters light buildings on fire so they can "promote business"?
Your thesis is complete nonsense and IMHO any excessive malware problem that you may have is a classic case of PEBKAC. Google it!

No that's not true. Now if you get e-mails saying go to this site for a virus protection or something close to that, then that would be called SPAM and it is not from Norton or one of the many other virus protection software.

I don't know about that, but I'm fairly sure that the reason why recreational drugs are banned is that a lot of people are making money off of the crime that prohibition causes: e.g. the drug lords, the police in terms of overtime, prison staff etc. I can't think of any other reason why they don't just decriminalize drugs, (like they did with alcohol in the US when they found that banning it didn't work and made things worse).

Avast and Spybot S&D are a good combo. ZoneAlarm has a free firewall.
