In this situation, mostly is cause by sound card driver. If you have an onboard sound card, use windows update to install the driver. If you bought a separate sound card, it should come with a installation CD, use the installation CD to install the driver, when ask for reboot, do so. After that you should have your sound back on again.

Okay but is it plugged into the right place? The light on only means there is power going to the speaker, not that it is plugged into the proper port.
What doesn't give you any options?

One of MS latest patches against the animated cursor unerability has broken RealTek sound card....
You may have an effected sound card. Try contacting Realtek or MS

Try reinstalling your sound card drivers,
Or you may be able to diagnose your problem by
Start ---->Run Type "dxdiag"
and selecting the sound tab to run some tests

go on control panel and click on "sounds and devices" make sure the control panel is on classic veiw, then make sure the volume is on the top, and the mute box isnt checked, also make sure on the program you are using to play songs, that the volume in that is turned up, and no mute feature is turned on.

Your computer is over heated..... shut your computer down and let it cool off before starting again... that should help

uninstall, then re-install the soundcard driver. failing this, buy a new soundcard, they are cheap, 10-15 bucks..
