These are some interesting answers. Everyone has made some good points that I didn't consider. But it makes me sad that the majority of people seem to think that we are too dumb to govern ourselves and need to be watched over by people who know better than us what we need. I don't want to have the majority bullying the minority (in fact it seems the minority are bullying the majority), but we don't seem to have any representation as things are now. Why not let people vote on the major issues, and give the results some consideration before passing or changing laws that affect us all? I'm sure a lot more people would vote if they thought it would matter.

If every proposal was decided by a majority vote of all citizens that are politically active would "rule" the country. Sadly, a large percentage of Americans don't vote.
Another result would be that the proposals benefiting the population centers would be more likely to pass than other legislation.
For example, CA has a very large population. It needs water because there is little annual rainfall in the state. They could propose legislation to divert water from other areas to the state. The larger population in the state would easily out vote the smaller populations of other areas.
The representative style of democracy tries to even this disparity so that less populous areas aren't taken advantage of. The two house system gives representation by population (The House of Representatives) and representation by Geographical Region (The Senate).

America is too big. Could you imagine 10 million people trying to be in same place, each requiring his say? Imagine how long that would take. Imagine the vote each time some bill is FINALLY done with discussion. True democracy is not practical in any large group. That is why we have a democratic republic.

the fools we elect don't know enough to do it right every time and they are supposed to be the pros. so we're going to let a populace that gets most of it's news from E TV and MTV vote on important issues when they can't balance their own check book.. sounds like a really god idea. Plus you answer your own question, it would be a representative democracy, aka a republic.

Your are such an idealist...
If you understood people, you would know why.
Obviously you don't and therefore you don't know why.
Here is a hint to wake you up:
Would you vote for a hansom and slim guy or fat and ugly guy (all other things being equal)?
My point: Most people are controlled by their emotion...not what is reasonable. The electoral college and our current government was set up as the last defense to save America from morons.

That would create chaos . Imagine voting like On American Idol . You have a phone assigned to you that only allows a single vote to be registered . Those possessing multiple phones can only have one registered to vote phone .If found in possession of more then one the death penalty seems appropriate .

Americans are hardly voting the very few times they need to as it is, do you really think it would be beneficial if we voted on everything. You do realize that Senator's and Representitive's jobs are essentially to vote on bills. Most people have jobs of their own that they need to go to and simply wouldn't have the time to vote on anything.

True Democracy is Utopian bullshit. Read a bill in any legislature on any subject and you will quickly realize that they are intentionally written to obscure what they are doing.
besides the "People" are generally a bunch of morons.
as Sid Vicious said "99% of the general public are........."
