That definitively will be decided on whether you need mobility or not. Current laptops provide almost the same functionality than desktops but for sure are more expensive. Also keep on mind that spare parts and repairs are more costly with a laptop. So my recomendation is that if you dont have any reason to be mobile, stick to a desktop.

Well it depends on if you want to be chained to a chair for however many hours you spend on your computer at a time. How long can you sit in one place? If the answer is not for very long, then go for the laptop. However, desktops do offer better sound and a larger screen. Ive been a desktop user my entire computer life (umm...for the past 20 years)...and I am ready to break away from this chair. Would like to be able to go where ever I want to with my computer, in house or out of house, and am willing to sacrifice the larger screen and better sound of my old desktop. As for brand, that's an easy one. GATEWAY!!! Yeh, they cost just a bit more, but if you want one that will last and be relatively problem free, there's your answer. I've had this Gateway since '98 and yeh, the dvd drive went out on it and I had to replace the video card to a better one, but otherwise it's been pretty solid over the years. Oh, and also with laptops you can't upgrade them as much as you can desktops. Just 'cos they're smaller. I know someone with a Dell desktop, and it's constantly giving her grief 'cos it just lacks (waaay too cheap). And I know someone with a HP laptop, and oh my....he's always cussin at the thing.
