Ahhh, that's cute. Listen, you can do anything while on your period. Do you think they give women a day off from combat when they are in fighting in war? Hello! All that stuff about no swimming, no exercising etc is old news. Step into the A.M. ! The truth is you can do anything while on your period. But if you want to use it as an excuse to get out of gym class. Go right ahead some people still fall for that.

It's certainly safe to exercise while on your period. As with any other time, let your body be your guide: If the cramps hit and hit hard, stop. If the cramps are mild and bearable, be mindful but stay active. It's always a good idea to keep moving! Exercise is an absolute essential for good health.

As far as whether your workouts/activities will worsen or lighten these cramps depends a great deal upon your existing level of fitness. If you're the type that's always on the go and doesn't sit around much, you should be just fine. If you've just recently started a fitness routine--but you're trying to undo years of inactivity--then your workouts could definately trigger some pretty good cramps. Either way, tread lightly at first since you're uncertain, and let time tell you how to approach this.

Of course you can make the cramping much better by staying fit. Muscles that are used to contracting in an efficient manner will be far less prone to giving you any trouble.

While on your period, your body will use many minerals and other nutrients. Relax, I'm not going to try and sell you supplements (as far as personal trainers go, I'm the "Anti-Supplement!"). But I will say to try sipping Gatoraid and focus more on your fruits and veggies during this time. And of course, stay well hydrated by drinking lots of water throughout the day.

I've found when I do nothing but sit around that my cramps are horrible.

Then I get busy and hardly notice them, so it is ok to workout while on your period.

There's really nothing you can't do when you have your period. If you feel ok, exercise. If your cramps are too bad, stop.

Exercising decreases cramps actually. You see, cramps are created by your uterus moving and pushing on other muscles. By moving around by exercising, you are allowing yourself to voluntarily move your uterus on your own. Exercising helps because it is you controlling movements. not your body.

Good Luck!
