Turkey. The city of Troy has been found, so you can verify it. It was the site of Schliemann's epic Bulldozer archaeology. He drove a bulldozer through the dig to get to the layer he thought was right and destroyed a tonne of stuff in the process

They looked the same as the Greeks, mostly dark-haired Mediterranean types, but there were obviously some blondes as well, as the name Chryseis (the golden one) suggests.
