No, in school-age, if my parents had caught me smoking, my mother would have BEATEN me... I was never suspended for anything. We had rules and LIVED by them
Small issue ? Well, since in the USA smoking is ONLY legal for those over 18, and banned in ALL schools (public buildings) I think suspension is just. But if they catch you with a GUN or DRUGS, you should be expelled and the County / State should place you in a lock-down school. Further offenses should send you on to prison.
In 1978-1982, our high school allowed those over 16 to smoke in a designated area...

When I was in school, smoking and skipping out were the two biggest issues. I've done both more than once and been caught more than once. I never got suspended tho. Our school just left it up to the parents (who tore our butts up) or delivered an on site punishment, like spanking. I always opted for the spanking at school. The paddle didn't hurt near as much as that "switch" Mom would cut off her flower bush. I don't know how that flower bush managed to live as long as it did.

Caught smoking in the class room. Didn't get suspended, got put on litter duty for 2 days and detention for 3

I grew up in a bad school district. They never suspended me. They would have had to suspend the entire school. In fact, Mrs. Lori my English teacher used to smoke in the bathrooms with us. She would even ask me if I had a lighter she could use.

I got in trouble 1 time. They smelled the smoke on my clothes and found the lighter. I was smoking in the bathroom.. I didn't get suspended though

Nope I havent but yes drugs and guns are more of a major issue

i know people in my school caught smoking and was suspended for like a month

Yes, I was sent to see the male gym coach, Mr. Rorbaugh ( we called him roarballs) and was given five swats from a paddle called the board of education. This, of course, was before the social workers convinced educators that such treatment would injure the student's psyche.

Yes..but at the time..a major issue..caught out behind the shed...never suspended..warned..too bad it wasn't enough..

Didn't everybody? (lol) Funny how times change isn't it? Thirty years ago it was the students going off campus to smoke, now it's the teachers!
