I wonder the same thing about golf...but someone must be enjoying it because it's always on TV. Basketball, actually has some excitement. But to each his own...

Baseball and NASCAR is boring. 90% of baseball is watching everyone stand around while the pitcher and the catcher throw the ball back and forth over and over until someone hits it. NASCAR is just a bunch of cars going 'round and 'round and 'round without slowing down until someone wins or crashes.
Basketball is pretty much nonstop action and there's always plenty of highlights. Baseball highlights sometimes only consist of- you guessed it- the pitcher throwing the ball to the catcher while some fool swats the air. NASCAR highlights consist of crashes (which we can see in just about any movie), a car passing another car (which we see every day on the way to work), or the winner tearing up the grass on the infield doing donuts. This is entertaining!??? Find another "sport" to call boring, because basketbal ain't it!

I agree. Since my blazers are out of the playoff picture it is all stanley cup for me. Want to know why the cup is better than basketball.
Basketball is a great sport. Pick up games, a little 3 on 3, some HORSE or 21, my idea of a good time. I could play all day and night, not necessarily well, but I enjoy it. Watching it on TV is a different story. I really can't get too much pleasure out of watching professinal basketball on TV. This spring I will be watching as many games as possible for the Stanley Cup. Last year was kind of despressing, but thank you very much Comcast for carrying the Memorial Cup. That was good times. There are many reasons why I like watching hockey more than basketball.
My point is not really to change the minds of basketball fans. It's more to illustrate to fellow hockey fans and people who aren't sure what to watch why hockey is the better sport to watch.
1. I could do a great job sitting on the San Antonio bench while they win the championship. I really could, they wouldn't have to play me and they could probably still win convincingly with me sitting on their bench. I'd be quickly fired from an NHL team for taking up space on their bench. Everyone has to play, not because rules require, but because your star playing the entire game is just silly. Everyone has to contribute to the success of the team. If the guys that play only 5 minutes stink, it shows.
2. Everyone has a piece of the championship. It almost makes me cry at the end of the Stanley Cup to watch the entire team share in the experience of winning the championship. No one gets to hog it, except for the captain who receives it for his team. Everyone from the captains to the back up goalie get equal time with the manifestation of their dream. There I go again...the tears.
3. Everyone shakes hands at the end. Another moment that almost makes me cry is when and the end of a hard fought grueling series two teams and their coaches all meet in the center of the rink and shake hands. Though all feelings may not be genuine it is a great display of sportsmanship that is missing from sports today.
4. Cheaters never prosper. When Bill Laimbeer got caught flopping it got anywhere from an "Oh Well" to a free basket leading to 1% of the total score. Penalties, especially silly ones like Diving, can potentially, and often do, cost the game.
5. Dick Bavetta wouldn't last 5 minutes in the NHL. I can see myself as a referee getting impaled by a puck or being sandwiched between players. They could all make it look like an accident too. This Bud is for hockey refs. I don't know how you do it, but I sure know that I couldn't.
6. The last two minutes last about two minutes. Not to mention only one timeout.
7. There are two opportunities to go to the bathroom, get a hot dog and a beer without missing any of the action or annoying your fellow fan. People get up all the time in baseball and basketball. I can't stand it. Do that crap at a hockey game, you might not come back.
8. Even the average foreign player is extremely polite and well spoken. Looking at the interviewer and camera, using complete sentences, saying thank you afterwards, take note kids. I heard Peter Forsberg talk the other day and I hadn't heard him in years. His English is better than mine...here come more tears.
9. Fouling has not part in the game strategy. Hack-a-shaq, please. If you commited penalties because your opponent had a bad powerplay you would have to get your head examined.
10. The players left at the end are gruesomely deformed. Injuries-bah! John Madden at the end of the Cup several years ago looked like Frankenstein's Freaking Monster. Every stitch, bruise and scar makes the experience seem that much more genuine.
NBA fans probably won't like this. I'm actually surprised if you made it past the first paragraph and didn't stop. For that I apologize. You have every right to keep watching the game you love to watch.
I am not a hockey player. In fact I can't even skate. So I apologize if I am misrepresenting the game for real hockey players. I am just conveying what I see on TV.

Compared to other sports I find basketball to be exciting, especially the last couple of minutes of the game.

Agreed!!!! Any sport where you can score more than a 100 points is no good. Maybe if they added checking or tackling I 'd watch.
