Should you base your understanding of the field through the filter of your religion or faith? No.

However, that does not mean one shouldn't have a religion or a faith to study the field, or even have it as a vocation.

If indeed God made the heavens and the earth (even if it actually took millions and millions of years) than every possible scientific and mathematical equation goes directly back to the one who put the rules in place -- wouldn't it?

No. Scientific theories are pure facts. Religion is personal belief.
