I know where those countries are but that is because I have always been good at geography. It is sad that many people in this country (USA) don't know much about geography. But judging from many of the questions and answers here at Y!A, it is obvious that they don't know much about grammar either, or even how to use the "Check Spelling" function. The disease is in the general state of education and lack of knowledge in geography is just a symptom of that disease.

I've had a hard time understanding why the general population is so incompetent in geography because it has always been easy for me. My feeling is that the subject has been deemphasized in American schools to the point where kids aren't exposed to it enough for them to adequately learn it. Most students in college have taken one or maybe two geography classes before graduating from high school. I also think that the subject probably isn't taught in a way to make it interesting or relevant. This problem should only continue to get worse as the subjects of history and geography are being left behind in the big push to teach our kids math and science.

My last geography course in school was back in the 6th grade in 1966. Even though it was my favorite subject, for some obtuse reason American schools removed geography from its curriculum around 1967 and I haven't seen it since. I study geography on my own since I've always loved the subject.
There are only a few colleges in the states which have a geography major.

I know where all these countries are and I'm from the U.S. (One of the many countries in the Americas) But few people know where all the 193 or so countries in the world are. The ones they know are usually based on countries they have cultural or economic ties with (MOST in the U.S. do not have such a relationship with the countries you mention)
To be fair, Geography here (USA..I don't know abouth the rest of the Americas) suffered a setback by associating itself with the various types of determinism, which were disproven, fell from favor and were associated with racism and other nasty stuff. It is returning due to the obvious need, but there is still work to be done..I agree.

It would appear that way but to generalise that all Americans don't know geography is just incorrect.
Armenia, Georgia and Iran are all to the East of Turkey

They are all in Asia (though Armenia and Georgia are both called Eurasian countries also because of their location near the meeting of the two continents)- geez, ask a tough one. Like what's the capital of Benin or what was the former name of Belize before independence. Thanks for your uneducated, stereotypical, anti-American rhetoric though. It shows that we do not have the market cornered on ignorance.

Its quite sad really , so many Americans are idiots. We have been at war for going on five years now and nobody can point out Iraq or Afghanistan on a map. Our lives are full of games and TV.
