For animal species in which males compete directly with each other for courtship/mating opportunities, defending a territory from other males can give a male exclusive mating access to the females on his territory.

For animal species in which females choose the males with which they want to mate, females will choose males that defend the territory with the most/best resources. So males with better territories will have more mating opportunities.

It depends on the species to a large extent.

In many species of birds, the males try to stake out the best territory to attract females. Here in Wisconsin, for instance, hordes of male robins return very early in the spring, usually well before it is warm enough for them to find food easily. But, even as they struggle to find food, they also have to find the best territory and defend it against the other males.

In wolf packs it is different. One female is in charge and is the only one to have pups each year. The others in the pack have to help find food for the offspring and to guard the territory against other nearby packs. Every wolf in the pack answers to the female in charge and must do as she says.

Other species have other methods.
