to quit smoking, any suggestions? (granted this is a forced quitting cuz I dont have the money, but I think its time to quit anyways, I am tired of being a slave to this addiction.) I mean I was able to combat an addiction to drugs (sober since 2/95) Surely this cant be as hard right?

well, i have heard that quitting smoking is as hard as kicking a heroin addiction for some people, and as easy as quitting caffeine for others

1- get rid of lighters, ash trays, and any other smoking paraphernalia

2- find a substitute... chewing gum, flavored tooth picks, hard candy... keep lots of things to drink around too, because without a cigarette, you will want to shove food in your mouth and that puts on weight fast

3- get support... find a friend that's like a drill Sargent that will keep you in line about the smokes

4- find a stress reliever.... a punching bag will do wonders, because without the nicotine fix, you are going to be mean

good luck!

well I don't know how you beat drugs...in my case a night in county was the impetus..quit cold turkey on my release..did much the same with cigarettes...decided to quit when last one was smoked...quit on 17 June 1971...I have slipped on about 8 or 9 nights since and had 1 cigarette each of those times.....it isn't easy ...no shame in using gum, pills or patches whatever helps you get over the hump..GOOD LUCK in your effort.. abused cocaine for 14 yrs..been clean since 5/91

I quit in Jan 2000, after 47 years of smoking. The hardest part for me was the first few days. I think its important to be involved in something you really like doing. It helps keep your mind off the cigs.

Hey, right on. It's hard because it's possible to get withdrawal symptoms when your body isn't used to the loss of daily smoking. Hmm..just sleep more often and might want to drink water. Something like that.

You have my best wishes for the hardest of tasks. Not Smoking can make not drinking and drugging a cake walk. Remember this mantra for inner dialog....Do not call yourself a former smoker call your self a non smoker the psychological difference can help you greatly.

Change your daily habits. What I mean is that you have to stay busy during your normal smoking times. Avoid bars for a while and your friend that smoke a lot.

You should get nicotine gum to help. It'll make it easier if you use a smaller amount each day, so you don't suddenly cause your nicotine level to drop.
