The areas I like are the Mission Bay area near Sea World. There are jogging and bike trails around the Bay and walk across the street and another boardwalk on the Pacific Ocean.
La Jolla is a wonderful suburb of San Diego with walks along the beach and a quaint downtown area. The Scripps Oceangraphic Institute is there as well as the University of Southern California SD which helps to keep a section of the beach unspoiled and uninhabited.
Balboa Park area... where you will find all the museums and the San Diego Zoo. There are many outdoor and indoor activities there. (Not real far from Old Town state park too)
Any of the northern subs are an ideal choice. It is fairly easy to get around San Diego so these things don't have to be in your back yard to enjoy them.
They actually have a downtown that is used and is safe to walk around and very enjoyable (Gaslamp Disctrict), Navy Pier, Ball park.
Coronado Island like La Jolla is rather quaint and near downtown and the parks.
Get ready for some sticker shock on the cost of homes. I live in the Midwest and an equivalent home to mine in San Diego is well into the 1 million plus catagory. Maybe that is what your husband is not so convinced of. Even rents for apartments will cost double what you thought was a fair price to pay for a mortgage. (Nice areas to live command a lot more for the same basic things.... go figure)
Good luck on your decisions and enjoy.

San Diego has more variety of neighborhoods than probably anywhere in the country. If you can't find the perfect place, you are not looking hard enough. You are not going to be able to feel the mood without being here, however, so take a trip before you put any money down. And don't say price is no issue for rents, most places in Rancho Santa Fe, for example, you could buy a little home in the South for 2 months rent. We have everything from brand new gated communities, to the 2nd richest zip code in the country, to near ghettos, to homes on a golf course, to trailer parks, to 80% Somali places, and everything in between. You WILL be able to find anything you are after.

San Diego is a fab are for raising kids-you have many theme parks (like Sea World & Legoland). It is a very old town with loads of history and historical places to visit (like Old Town & the Warf) It is super safe there are Military stationed a Miramar and many live locally with their families and you are a stones throw from a weekend getaway to sunny Mexico. San Diego has a lot of cham and a lot less of the Los Angeles choas. Good Luck!

I would say the best neighborhoods to live and raise a child taking into consideration the schools would be Encinitas, Del Mar, La Costa, Solana Beach or Cardiff. A little pricey in these areas but safe, clean, family oriented and the schools are excellent.

Downtown La Jolla near the Cove is one of the prettiest places to have pleasant, safe walks; cafe's, interesting shops, park benches to sit and rest, etc., etc. Lovely beaches (even one with seals) to stroll down plus tide pools for your child to play in -- really idyllic. Life just doesn't get much better for a young mother I don't think.
The downside is that it's hard to commute out of downtown La Jolla to the rest of San Diego as there's no easy freeway access to city center.

North County Inland is really nice. Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Penasquitos, Carmel Mtn. Ranch are all clean, mellow and pretty areas.
