Some people told me New Jersey was very friendly. Others said California. Floridans don't seem friendly. Has anyone made a comparison between American states regarding friendliness?

Like others, I found the southern states the most friendliest. The further south, and the warmer the weather, the friendlier. Florida, and California are the exception.
However, you need to think, are you basing this answer on trying to relocate to a friendly area??
Because if you are from a major city, it will be hard for you to move to nowhere, texas, or state road, sc.

Compared to NY, NJ, IL, CA, MI:
AL,TX, GA, TN, AL, NC&SC are very friendly.

Personally, I like the Major cities such as Atlanta, Nashville, Birmingham, Charlotte, Dallas, and Houston which I found very friendly compared to lets say a Detroit or a Chicago.

Friendliest Major City(top 10 city) would be Atlanta or Dallas

From what I understand, the people living in the southern states are friendliest -- are very casual in manner and just love to talk.

You might want to check out Oklahoma.

I wouldn't describe Californians as friendly. You need time and energy for that and I don't think most Californians have it.

There are different kinds of friendly...

There is casual, conversational, and hospitable friendliness. You find this in the southern states--especially Alabama and S. Carolina.

Then there is very outgoing, sociable, easy-to-make friends kind of friendly. For this Oregon is tops. I was in downtown Portland once and some homeless guy came up and started talking to me about my life. Very creepy.

Finally there is the helpful, ask-for-anything, yet reserved sort of friendliness. Coloradans are best at this. People there are more introverted, reserved, and quiet but if you ask them for anything they'll do it for you. Very kind, helpful folks.

If you want friendliest, stay away from the coasts. Look to the South outside of Florida and the Midwest.

I've been to all the southern states (besides Florida) and they all seemed pretty friendly to me....Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, Mississippi, North and South Carolina and so forth. If I had to say one was friendlier than the other, I'd say it is Alabama.

Geogia is full of southern charm so people tend to help you when your car breaks down and they say "yes ma'am, no sir" still. Just stay away from the crazy Atlanta working moms...they're scary.
