i do it every six months or so it does wonders but it takes about 2 days for me to get it back were i want it then it is as fast as when i built it :D

No it is not harmful to your computer. It is actually very good to do this because it gets rid of viruses and corrupted files. The only draw back is you have to reinstall all of the updates and you have to backup your data that you do not want to lose. Make sure you reformat the drive each time before you install the new OS.
