Would a pet rabbit be a nice present for my niece? She's turning nine on Tuesday.

I was nine when I had my pet rabbit. With a bit of help from my mother, I think I was old enough to handle the responsibility. And I was old enough to learn to take care of an animal myself. But if your niece is an immature nine year old, I think maybe wait 'til she about 11.
Some rabbits may bite if invading their territory when they don't want you to or they want some alone time, so your niece would have to be mature enough to understand the behaviour of a rabbit and why they do certain things. They poop alot too. Constant clearing up is a must.
Will it be a house rabbit? Make sure all wires are out of reach. Rabbits can be house trained to use a litter box for wee but not usually poo - the poor bunny would be sitting in it's litter box all the time coz of the amount of droppings it does in a day. So some may be laid around the house. If you have cold winters, the rabbit would have to come into the house on bad days. During my school years, I heard about a lot of rabbits dying from the cold.
Rabbits have wonderful personalities. They are certainly not a sit in a hutch a eat some straw animals. My rabbit enjoyed playing with a ball. We would kick it away and he would roll it back, like a dog would retrieve a stick. He enjoyed some cuddles but not always, so your niece would have to recognise when the rabbit wants and doesn't want a cuddle.
Rabbits live for about 8 years and some have been known to live to 10 or 12 years. So if you did buy your niece a rabbit, you would have to be sure that she is able to commit to taking care of an animal for this long length of time. And ask permission of her parents as they will be helping her out until she knows what to do and will probably be paying for food and vet bills etc.
And don't forget a hutch! Rabbits like their own room to retire to.

I would never buy a pet for a person.
If they don't really want it they will end up in the humane society alone and scared.
Buy her some gift certificates to the mall or something like that.
She will like it and no animal will end up suffering needlessly.

You have to know what you're doing to properly take care of a rabbit. Take the time to research it first- a lot of rabbits end up in animal shelters because people didn't know what was involved in taking care of them.

Buy it for her because you know she would want one. Make sure she's responsible enough to take care of it. And they can bite sometimes and it hurts like a mo-fo. A lot of times people buy their kids pets because they're popular at the time and then get rid of them when they're not fun anymore. Please don't be one of these people.
