Absolutely. And it's a good thing.
I'm not saying that it's healthy, or attractive, to be fat.
What I mean is, before Capitalism, no nation could generate such incredibly huge surpluses of wealth that even its poorest citizens would be as rotund as American welfare recipients.
Because of Capitalism, everyone in this country has more than enough to eat. Whether they, or you, should be eating all of it is a lifestyle choice that was unavailable to the average person living under all of the economic systems that came before--or who live under other economic systems, today.

Obesity is caused by over-eating. Whether you have a varied and healthy diet or one that consists of only grains or rice or vegetables. Any food can cause a weight gain if one eats too much of it. It is the CALORIES consumed over and above what is needed to fuel the body that causes weight gain. It matters not where those calories come from.
There is some thought that genetics also play a small part in it.

Some what, but I think the place where children should learn good nutrition other than the home is at our government run schools! What better place to provide healthy food and to teach children how to eat healthier and get alittle exercise in! This will set them up for better nutrition choices later in life.

CAPITALISM, is evil
Why because it has to have 70 to 80% of the people living with more debt than can be repaid and millions of people living on the minimum wages all across the globe and it even employs the communist to work, otherwise it crumbles.
EDIT
Some people are not convinced, well the next time you need a tool run down to Sears, Home Depot and buy yourself some name brand tools Made In China, That's Communist China, Key word Communist
You can start with the site listed, I would give more but I'm afaired you people can't handle it

Obesity most commonly occurs in the lower and middle wage brackets as they can not afford the healthy alternative to a diet filled with saturated fat and chemicals...kind of ironic that the fewer things that corporations put into our foods the higher the price goes.

Yeah, you might say that.
And doughnuts are a "gateway food," lol.
Ah...Deuce...last I saw a pic of you, it seemed like you were packing a few extra lbs. yourself. Geez...
But its also interesting that many people falsely think that they will instantly begin to love their bodies once they lose the weight they feel they need to lose. That's simply not true.
Some of the most tortured people are also some of the thinnest. Ask just about any person from a size 6 to a size 26 about their weight-loss needs, and most will tell you that they really need to lose a few pounds.
We don't know WHAT we want...

To the idiots who say that "even our poor are obese...."
It's not because they have it so good. It's because their poverty forces them to eat the most unhealthy processed crap foods such as McDonalds etc.
Healthy food is very very expensive. Go to WholeFoods and see for yourself.
The poor are virtually forced to eat stuff that makes them fat and unhealthy.
OkieBoy, you're a moron.
The poor buy stuff that fills them up for the least amount of money. If they have $10 in food stamps, why would they buy a head of lettuce for $1.99 which requires expensive tomatoes and other topings along with dressings. Can you feed a whole family for $10 on one large salad? But you can take that same $10 and buy crap food and feed everyone.
BTW, many poor work two jobs. Who has the time or energy to go and parade around a gym after working 60 hours a week? Only relatively well-off people can do that. They can take their laundry to a cleaner, pay someone to wash their car, pay a maid to come clean the house etc. so they have time to work out. A poor working mom doesn't have time for that. You sound like you've been very sheltered all your life. Well, enjoy your little tunnel vision.... sure makes life easier. I don't make things easy for myself - I like to know truths, even if they make me feel uncomfortable.

Capitalism is the only economic answer that produces any positive change. Certainly, some individuals may choose to overindulge in food stuffs, but that is OK. Capitalism helps everyone.

I would agree that obesity is a product of consumption.
And the person in front of me at the grocery store, with the EBT card (food stamps) doesn't look hungry.

I have got to say that I have been in Europe and the thirst for the almighty Euro is just as alive there as here. I guess it's how you spend the money.
