3M makes a real good adhesive remover, pull the decals off with a razor blade and scrub it down with a real soft cloth. I used this method when I had to repaint a bunch of school busses last summer, comes out reasonably clean looking if you have steady hands. On a paint job that old though, you're gonna have to repaint if you want perfect.
