I'm 33 weeks and have been having the same problem.
sleeping on my side is uncomfortable as all the weight makes it ache after ten Min's, then its a mission trying to turn over on the the other side when ten minute later that side is uncomfortable too.
i wake up on my belly most days as it must be the only position i can sleep in and at first i was worry in case i squashed him but my midwife reassured me he is well cushioned in there and that hes fine and at this stage now hes quite happy to give me some hard kicks to let me know hes OK.
don't worry you wont squash your baby you just sleep in what ever position makes you comfortable.

When i was pregnant I felt the same way, plus I have always slept on my stomach. I ended up sleeping on the couch and I would pull the cushions out a little and stick my belly in the wedge in the back of the couch so I wouldn't be on my side and I wouldn't be on the baby, or I would hang off the side of the couch...I was always so tired from waddling around that I would fall asleep quickly anyway.

any position you can sleep in is okay. your baby is not being squished. my mom once had a friend that actually slept on her stomach for her whole pregnancy. i don't see how that's possible but she did. if you can sleep on your back then do so. people say it's not recommended but if the baby compresses your artery that supplies blood to your body your body will sense that and will automatically prompt you to move. have you tried one of those pregnancy pillows? i hope you'll be able to get some sleep.
