I have checked the USPS website and there seems to be nothing to stop you from having a PO box in another state.

There is an USPS application that needs to be completed and submitted to the local Post Office.

Your ID will be checked and verified.

You might prefer to get a mail box at a local mailing services company. Unlike the post office, these places will send your mail to you (at a nominal cost), and even check and tell you if you have mail if you contact them by phone or email.

You can get these even if you live out of state ... or out of the country. (Many Canadians have mail boxes in the U.S.)
