Don't really know how to explain but is the threat of washing a mouth out with soap something only females use? I have never heard males use this threat and am wondering if it is a "gender thing" of a sort? thanks

It was a favorie with my Mom when we used curse words or had a "smart mouth".

I think (in general) women are more likely to use more passive forms of punishment than men. Although Mom occasionally spanked us, it was typically restriction when we misbehaved. With our father, it was ALWAYS a spanking.

This would probably fit better in a sub-category of Society & Culture than Arts & Humanities.

I think it is to. I actually followed through with the threat many years ago when my daughter was three. She would not stop saying F*%#@ so I put the first little bit of the soap in her mouth. I would never ever do this again. First she spewed and then was sick for two days later. Needless to say I felt very guilty. And.... it didn't stop the swearing.
