The government is very compartmentalized. Imagine the US government as 1,000 individual agencies and departments. Any reporting by the U.S. government comes from one of these offices and is usually shared to the public through written reports. There actually may be acknowledgement by the U.S. government of the paranormal, but it is burried somewhere in a report or file.

The government also doesn't tell the public that dictionaries exist for paranoid people who can't spell.
In general, the public can't be trusted with such information. Just look around you to see what kind of people we're dealing with. Their reactions would vary from panic to revolution.

It would panic people its like yelling "Fire" in a crowded theatre. Look in a history book about the radio broadcast of War of the Worlds I heard it didn't know about it & I panicked like all the others till my Dad said it was a joke He'd heard it around the 30's Sorry we are all a bunch of party poopers but that's the breaks
