Ring main connection via plug and socket is fine to power the timer and ignition, if its a gas model. If it's a dual fuel model it would have to be connected to it's own 16/20/32 amp circuit depending on the electrical load. You will have to check the rating in the handbook.

A Bon Ami Substitute would be a good start, and here is what it is so you can look for a similar product in your market. it simply is an extremely fine, gentle but very effective calcium carbonate abrasive powder that is used wet or dry. Its bonuses are that it is chlorine, perfume, phosphorus and dye-free as well as biodegradable. It can be used on almost anything in the household except windows or mirrors. It is strong enough to brighten and improve most metals/stainless steel, so you may similarly have luck if you cautiously try a fine silver polish or other fine abrasive as a replacement. It is more effective than toothpaste because its abrasiveness can be modified by adding water to the powder as needed, where toothpaste is already ground too fine to be as useful. Something rather new are those (Mr. Clean I think, but maybe other brands exist, esp. in UK) "eraser" sponges that promise to "magically" remove scuffs and scars from floors and walls. Those are also surprisingly helpful. Finally, just like stubborn floor scuffs or burns on a pan, it will probably come out with many minutes of dedicated scrubbing with all of your strength and an abrasive dishsafe scour pad. If you must resort to steel wool, only the finest grade will be fitting in order to minimize potential damage, and it might be better found at a building supply center or specialty kitchen and cookware store since general supermarket products for cleaning are usually too coarse. good luck.
