Like Spiderman or Batman for instance? Is it because deep down we like the fantasy of good guys beating the bad guys? Is it because we know the justice system often fails (when it lets a modern day Othello murder his wife then go free because of his celebrity & the best lawyers money can buy for instance...) and we could use a little vigilante-ism? Is it because many of us were picked on at some point & like the idea of standing up to bullies, standing up for what's right? Is it because we secretly desire revenge on those who do wrong & we like to live vicariously through these heroes who put things right again?

Or maybe it's just me. I grew up idolizing Wonder Woman & the Bionic Woman as a kid (ok yes I was a child of the 70s). I used to wish I had superpowers & could go out & punish the evil & save the innocent...Girl power!

:)

On a general level I say people want to see the unjust righted, and we draw to those who have the courage to make a stand... Generally it is the security officers, police, judicial system and the military. In some cases though, the criminals get away with the crime, and it is a lone person that gets fed up with some scum bag that is living a life of crime and is drawing a family member into this life of crime... I have read it in the papers from time to time. It always draws a huge controversy.
As a kid I watched the old cartoons of Spider Man, The Hulk (live action), Batman (live action... *BOP!*), even Wonder Woman.
Did you know the creator, (William Moulton Marston) of Wonder Woman was the person who invented the lie detector?
There is more to it though, at least for me. Each superhero goes through a point of turmoil, or in some cases constant turmoil. Examples... Spidy 2 where he calls it quits, (the 90's cartoon of X-Men) where Wolverine goes to investigate his past, (a lot more detailed in the cartoons), Batman Begins when he takes off for Asia, and finally finds himself. Yet with all they go through, they are steadfast and save the day... Or at least realize how much they are needed and come to their senses, (Spidy), as a good example.
Going to school, there were times I was picked on just because society in known to single out those who stand out. So I can relate to the constant reminder that superhero stories tell of being outcasted just for being different... Lets face it not all superheros are always well liked. I could go on with this, but I think I should wrap this up.

Could be just as you have been wondering.
And could be the thrill of the impossible being made possible.

However, if we go deeper inside our souls, we might see a glimpse of a better answer:

Everything in this universe tends to be itself and behave according to its nature. Weakness, by definition, tends to subjugate naturally to super powers without feeling ashamed or humiliated because its subjugation as such is justified. This is a trick of the mind to make the ego admit its weakness and save face at the same time. It is a self-defensive mechanism the ego develops to keep its self-respect although it admits helplessness and weakness in the presence of an undefeatable power. No body would consider you weak if your level of weakness is compared to Superman or the Bionic Woman - to the contrary, people would appreciate your taste and super ambitions.

Our fascination with superheros I think comes because we see ourselves in our hero's and maybe if not ourselves, who we long to be. Who we hope we can become, not so much in a physical sense, as in a spiritual and emotional being. Strong, Courageous, standing for truth and justice, fearless and selfless, full of purpose and a confidence in knowing who we are.

In my opinion, It dates back to original creation. We too often hear about original sin, but not original creation and along with it original glory.
The was a time, albiet brief but none the less important. A time when man was created as a walking statue of god himself. We long for that state again, where original glory will be reflected from the Sun as the moon shines in the night. It's the moon that shines, but from the light of the sun. As with us, we long for the glory of the creator to reflect off us and to be seen as we were created to be. We long to be brave, we long to be loved, we long to be needed and sought after and fought for. The human heart, in all it's depth, strength, and fragileness is probably the most misunderstood treasure we have been given. We all long to be superheros, untill we realize we are. I know the names of some great super heros of our time that you left out, you may know them as Mother, Father, Brother, Pastor, Neighbor, or Friend. In these roles you have the possiblity of doing more than what's natural for one another, but achieving the super-natural, a nature that is above that of the normal humane nature which exist in our world.

The super heroes paint a picture of an ideal world. Who would not be drawn towards them? I grew up wishing I had the powers of Samantha ( Bewitched) and Jeannie ( I dream of Jeannie) ! In a perfect world we would all be super heroes :)

I think we all hope we see a little bit of ourselves in those heroes. They become idealized versions of ourselves, righting wrongs and confronting injustice.

i think it is because of the fact that super heroes somehow fulfill a side of us that we can't seem to fulfill: doing the supernatural.

all of us crave to do something spectacular and through these super heroes, we seem to at least have a glimpse of ourselves doing these spectacular things that they can do, at least in cartoons and movies...
