I hear fire dog is pretty good, but not quite what I'm looking for as far as cost is concerned. I just need to transfer a few program files and a ton of documents.

hi...maybe create a network with the two computers, then transfer this way (you know, share the files first...)

if you don't already know how to create a network, the desktop help feature is actually quite useful in getting you started or use the URL in source to find some more detailed tips

If you want the system to work just like it is now, simply clone the drive using Acronis True Image. Sometimes the new drive even comes with cloning software.

If you don't clone:
Programs must be reinstalled on the new drive.

Documents are best transfered by attaching the old drive internally (it shows up as a D: drive). Or you can get an external USB case and put the old drive in it. That way you'll have it for doing backups too!

Program files cannot always be transfered - they need to be installed including library files, and that often cannot be done manually.

I would recommend if you have a home network, you transfer documents (and images, music, etc.) over the network. If you do not or don't know how to set one up, get an external hard drive or a USB thumb drive (depending on how much space the files take up) and use that to transfer the stuff.

you have several easy options

1. put your old computer and the new one on a network and transfer the data via the network (need a hub/switch)
2. you can buy a network crossover cable and transfer them that way
3. you can buy a 28 dollar 2 gig usb and transfer the data that way (useful even after you transnfer)
4. if you have an ipod you can use that as a hard drive and transfer ti that way
5. you can take the drive out of the old computer and hook it to the new one (as a slave) and when you reboot you will see both drives so you can copy from one drive to another.
6. you can use "xdrive" check out below (its free)
7. if you have a web site (with a domain) then you can use that to ftp from the old computer and the ftp to the new computer

I'd say Home Premium. Ultimate is always the best choice, but Home Premium is the best all around choice in terms of cost and features. Just don't get Home Basic, haha.

Depending on your budget and how much you're transferring, a USB Stick or a spare harddrive usually works for me.
