'It's the rich what gets the pleasure
It's the poor what gets the blame
It's the same to whole world over
Ain't it all a blooming shame'
And not only the whole world over, throughout history.

How about since the strongest caveman took food from anyone else? Look at how some of the early rulers lived. You think Xerxes lived like the poorest Persian? You think Pharaoh lived like the slaves he kept? Neither do I. There has been as always will be a gap.
Plus some people are more talented than others. If I could have played golf like Jack Nicklaus, I wouldn't be living in a three bedroom, 1,500 square foot house that won't be paid off for 12 more years. But that is better than what the people living in the projects have.
There has always been a gap and will always be one. Check out The Discovery Channel and you see a gap in some of the animal kingdom. The top lion lives better than the others. The females hunt and he goes to eat.

It's unfortunate but humans as animals are selfish beings, the divide which your refering to which today the people on the richer side of things like to call the 'unequal distribution of wealth' can have its origins drawn back to the beginning of time and not just in humanity. It is any organisms primary instinct to try and have as much as it can so that it can live as comfortably, as well off, as is possible. The question, although on the surface perceptively quite simple, is certainly a question from which many implications and queries can be sourced from.
It would be very difficult to ascertain a exact event or time period to answere the question. I believe the best way to answere this questin is to think about when the first time someone ever asked this question was. When was the first time that we were able to contemplate quantities in our belongings???
Good Question! very deep.

Richness is the product of people who have a profitable idea and act upon it. They not only produce a better life for themselves...but also for their children and children's children.
Someone in the family lineage has to take the initiative to move themselves from poor to rich.
(or vice versa ...squander the family fortune and move the family into poverty)
Wealth will not come from resentment or redistribution, but from a drive and a will to succeed.

I agree with the first respondent who asked, "How old is history?" That sums it all up quite well. The gap has always been there for as long as the earth has been peopled by human beings.
