We hear about out-space projects, projects that may take hundreds of years to realize. Religious projects, political administration projects, etc.... behind which is a known and historically proven personal or reduced number of beneficiaries.
Excess food is available as well as money that can be diverted to even-out the missery in most countries and continue with important research to improve human existance IN GENERAL NOT JUST FOR A FEW SELFISH UNWORTHY ELEMENTS who dont deserve belonging to the HUMAN RACE. We are all going to DIE anyway, that is what makes us all EQUAL no one is going to get out of this world alive .... SO LET US ALL MAKE OUR EXISTANCE AS PLEASANT AS POSSIBLE.
DONT ANYBODY THINK THEY ARE ABOVE OR BELOW ANY OTHER PERSON if you have intelligence dont be "flipping" stupid use it to improve life on this earth NOW it will benefit you and by extension benefit all other humans, your descendants and the planet earth.
Who cares if there is life in other planets?

We must get our priorities right, once earth and All its beings are taken care of fully and properly, then venture and expend on "luxuries".

If you think space exploration is wasteful, what about the trillions of dollars spent annually on militarism, just by the United States?

The U.S. could cut their military budget by 5%, and use the money to provide food, housing, clean water and education to every person on Earth. Their international prestige would be lifted so high by that act that they would not need most of the remaining 95%.

You talk as if space exploration is the reason for poverty. Actually war is. The amount of money the US government spends on military might, solely with the purpose of destroying life, could be used for alot more valuable things. About three manned missions to mars per year. Compared to the amount of money that is being spent on death and destruction in all the various wars on earth the cost of space explorations is totally insignificant. The actually value of space exploration is limitless however. Suppose we make contact with an alien civilization that could tell us exactly how we could make our existence as pleasant as possible. Suppose we don´t because the Pentagon would rather spend money on a new bunker buster bomb than let NASA build a dish to study signals from an insignificant star some 3000 light years away.
And don´t forget those worthless, insignificant space exploration by-products, like solar panels, that ARE making life better for the very poor and needy.

It's true that everybody's going to die someday, and in this planet there're a lot of troubles to think in. But I'd love to discovered life in others planets. It'd mind we aren't alone in the vastness of the universe. When Albert Einstein formulated the famous theory of relativity, he descovered that the universe will be expand eternity, but this idea was terrible for him, so he put in a constant, k, because he couldn't support the solitude. If k is bigger than a precise number, the universe will be contract. If it's smaller, the universe will expanded always. If k is the number, universe will find the balance. I, like Einstein, can't support lonely, so I prefer think there are another species in the universe. Although I don´t forget our planet.

Your thoughts are indeed noble and wish they could be converted into reality.

But who cares about life on other planets...I believe we all should.

Aliens, who might be far too superior than us can pose us a serious military threat that might endanger the very societies we live in and our centre of existance.

While aliens might not have any hostile intentions, they might trigger off some sort of a bacterial or viral pandemic unwittingly because the microbes they might bring in and spread on Earth inadvertantly- might have no remedy here.

Also, aliens might be able to offer us some of their advanced technology that might indeed help solve all the ills of this world and make us live more happily as Earthlings.

I beleive that just knowing aliens exist might help us resolve all our differences between one-another and reunite us humans as one large global family- where one cares for another.

I can see it now. The conversation at Arecibo goes sometime like this:

Zorp from Planet P - Oh, by the way, I take it that you guys on earth haven't figured out how to turn sand, CO2, salt water, and a tiny bit of sunlight into a highly nourishing form of protein for almost no cost in a process that pulls excess CO2 out of the atmosphere from burning fossil fuel. It produces a byproduct that cures all forms of cancer too. Would like us to transmit the process? "

Radio Astronomer - Sorry, we can't receive it. President Justice Toall vetoed the bill funding our research budget, so they'll be pulling the plug on the telescope now. Thanks anyway. Signing off.

I for one certainly believes there is other life out there, proving it is all I ask for. I'll not be so arrogant as to say life does not exist else where. In regard to you as a human being I say live and let live no matter that I think you are the reason we made birth control.

Who cares? Anyone who understands science and technology--because they know that such basic research is the foundation for all the the benefits of both that people enjoy today--including ignorant neanderthals who pound out anti-science messages on computers they do not understandand could not build in a thousand lifetimes.

It's just a natural human curiosity to wonder if they are special or alone.
Well they are not alone and all intelligent, objective aliens in the universe are special as they are the creation of a universe that suddenly developed the capacity to become aware of itself we have the privilege to be the eyes and ears of the universe.

I agree. We need to be making earth as livable as possible while we're here!

I believe that we will never encounter intelligent life beyond earth's boundaries while earth exists (other than the life that WE put out there).

I have spoken to professional and amateur sky observers who - though they'd spent much of their life observing - had NEVER seen something in the sky that they couldn't explain.

1. I'm happy to spend $ for defense purposes.
2. I'm happy to spend $ for to keep life sustainable beyond earth (should earth's atmosphere become unlivable). If that means building space stations, I'm for it.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) uses the best technologies in existence to view our the skies.

NORAD's mission is to continuously provide " worldwide detection, validation and warning of a ballistic missile attack on North America and maintains continental detection, validation, warning and aerospace control of air-breathing threats to North America, to include peacetime alert levels and appropriate aerospace defense measures to respond to hostile actions against North America."

I spoke to a person who had spent many years watching the skies from this facility. He said that he did NOT believe that there was life from other planets. He added, that it was HIS theory that IF we were truly experiencing "visitors" - that it may be some sort of time/space continuum issue... Again, there's nothing out there that Earthlings didn't put there...!

In summary, I'm all for building viable space colonies so that we can keep humanity going and I'm all for spending money for defense. IF there IS other intelligent life "out there," it doesn't matter right now because it will be MILLIONS of years before we'll ever encounter them.

Meantime, WE'RE the ONLY ONES HERE!
So, let's ACCEPT that RESPONSIBILITY and take care of OURSELVES!

did you ever heard about communism? this is what you are describing. if you think it's a good thing, I can tell you for sure it is not.
and you are wrong, there aren't enough resources on earth for all of us.
anyway, life is a competition, we have to do all we can to be better then others. some time ago, better meant stronger/faster; now, being better means having more resources.

about life on other planets - it's the same as man wanting to fly, first a dream, a wish, and then, after centuries, reality.
