No they don't.
Fat chance means no chance at all. As in "You have a fat chance at dating Brad Pitt."
And slim chance means exactly that -- there is a very slim margin that you may get a chance. "You have a slim chance of winning this weeks lottery."

Why? Beacuse they do. Fat chance is said tongue in cheek in a more joking manner while slim chance is said more seriously.
eg: Fat chance you have of making the team. AND You have a slim chance of making the team.
The latter tends more to indicate that though the odds are against it, it might happen. The former really suggests that although it might be possible it is extreemly unlikely.
A bit like having an iceberg's chance in hell really.
Buckley's! (Buckley had no chance.)
No chance!
Stop dreaming.
You're kidding yourself.
Quit while you are ahead.
All have very similar meanings that the argument is one which has little, if any, chance of success.

Both mean you've got yourself into an ill fitted situation. ;-D
But, to me, fat chance means impossible and slim chance means, IF YOU'RE luckly and wise and determined, you'll get in there. I'd rather have a slim chance than a fat chance.
