The Christian religion states we are to help & be kind to others (amoung other things), but that does not mean other religions share that same thought. Nor does it mean that all Christians, or folks from other religions, practice what their religion is based on.
It gives a person a great feeling to help others until they start taking advantage of you. Too many folks feel that the world owes them a living and could care less what other think or feel. It could be in the way they were raised or something that happen to them.
Your question, while heart felt, is like the yin & yang-day & night, etc. We must have the two sides for balance even if we don't care for one of the sides.

I don't feel that we are here to help others. We are here to make our lives good, and it's everyman for him or herself. In the past 20 years I have found this is the way it is. It's all about money and power. People will use you, lie, cheat, steal, and con you to get your money. It's a selfish self-centered world we live in. If you arent' educated and have money then you are one that the higher up's will take advantage of. Just because they wear a suit and tie doesn't mean they are good people. (they could be the worst) Many are child molestors, and rapists. You really have to watch out for everyone. Preachers, doctors, teachers, boy or girl scout leaders. EVERYONE !
