Yes you can. You DO have to have a password already set up to log into windows though. Follow classic's instructions if you need to set this up. But listen. YES you CAN LOCK the computer. You DON'T have to log off!!

Press the Windows Key and 'L'
That locks it.

If you don't have a password set up, you can still lock the computer, but all someone has to do to get back in is to press enter when prompted for the password.
Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to log back in.

Creating A Log On Password For Windows XP

Go into your Control Panel by first clicking on the Start Button.

Then click on the Control Panel icon located in the right column of the Start Menu.

If your Start Menu is set to the Classic View, then begin by clicking on the Start Button.

Then click on Settings, then click on the Control Panel icon to open up the Control Panel.

Now, Double click on the User Accounts icon to open up the User Accounts window.

Then click on the User Account that you want to create a password for.

Then click on the Create a password link on the left side of the screen.

Windows will ask you to Type a new password and also ask you to confirm it.

Type your Password in both areas and then you can also type in a password hint as well.

Now click on the Create Password button at the bottom of the screen to save your changes.

Windows will then ask you if want to make your files and folders private.

You can decide according to the provided information and then click on your choice.

Your password will be saved and you will need to enter it the next time you start your system.

Now close the User Accounts window and the Control Panel window to return back to your session.

yes. you can put a password on windows, and disable the other accounts, and you can also set a password for starting the computer and accessing the harddisk.

to put a password on windows, right click on 'my computer' on the desktop and click 'manage'. select 'users and groups' and disable all users except the administrator account, and set a password.

to set harddisk and start up passwords, press the function key to access bios settings on start up. on many computers this is F8 or F12. it will tell you which key if you restart the computer and watch the screen.

Honestly, XP passwords can be broken.

You can put a password on XP and it will keep out most people, but geeks know how to break it. In fact, I keep my password reset cd handy for when people forget their passwords!

Set up your screen-saver to require a password. Use Control Panel + Display.

Also, use Log-Off when you leave your computer.

you can lock it using the BIOS, look for a 'press f12' message or something similiar on startup, and it should be pretty clear from the menu that pops up.
