www.menufoods.com has a list of specific brands for you to avoid. Many of the brands on the list have been put on the list as a precaution only due to the wheat gluten. I am a vet technician that has been getting tons of questions on the food recall subject. Many of my clients have decided to make homemade food for their animals. That is fine, but please make sure it is well balanced. Your local veterinarian should be able to help you. My clinic has a whole cookbook for cats and dogs.
Last week we had a long meeting about the recall and more specifically what we are really feeding our pets. I am shocked and disgusted to know what is in the food. Look up some ingredients in your pet food. Specifically propylene glycol (similar to antifreeze) and ethoxyquin which are preservatives. Ethoxyquin, I have been told, is no longer allowed in human grade food because it may cause cancer(but is still in some spices). Powdered cellulose (found in many foods, and yes even in veterinary diets) is saw dust - a filler!!
Look at the ingredients. We are recommending natural foods like Innova, Evo, Timberwolf, Merricks. Go to their websites and see the difference. Many of these can be purchased at you local feed and grain or Agway.

I honestly think that at this point, with how widespread the problem has become, the amount of people and pets affected by it, and the vast number of brands and types on the recall list, the best thing to do at this point would be to recall ANY pet food made in the timeframe they've determined the poisoning took place. The whole situation is really ridiculous and just a shame.

They told the stores, and the stores removed the product. If you go to the store right now, all the food on the shelves will be non-recalled.
If you have some food left in your house from before the recall, look at the packaging carefully. If Menu Foods made it, that name will appear somewhere on the package, even if in very small writing. If I were you and found that, I would just throw out that package and head to the store, where everything on the shelf Right Now is not affected by the recall.

They are. Check Yahoos current news from April 5. One link is www.sunshinemills.com. The Yahoo article has an FDA link as well, which lists all the companies so far identified. However, there are apparently at least six companies and over 100 brand names involved, including at least one dry food, contrary to earlier reports.

There is no factory that makes just that brand, and not all of that Brand is made in one factory.
You may have multiple brands but from a particular factory that is affected.

simple answer is until you hear other wise, dont use any product made by any company between 12/31/06 and 4/1/07. check the product code dates on the containers and act accordingly. in the event that your favorite critter dies from using their product, there are legal remedies that follow, and all of them are afraid of just one law suit.
