i've been a heavy smoker for at least four years and just found out i was pregnant a week ago. i quit cold turkey right away but have been getting uncomfortable heart palpitations for the past few days. could this be because of the smoking?

Yes, you could get heart palpitations because your body is withdrawing from a heavy narcotic, nicotine. Nicotine is a very serious drug. I recommend you contact your medical doctor to see if they can help you with this problem.

Good for you for making the decision to stop smoking to have a healthy baby. Give yourself a pat on the back.

I'm trying too and have the same problem. The best answer for your question, is in the source below. I would have to think, "jittery" would feel the same as heart palpitations.Always remember nicotine is a drug, and a powerful one too, so we must expect drug withdrawal effects. I just go nuts the second something goes wrong and lighht up. It's hard but possible, I wish you the best of luck! If you use the Yahoo search and type in quittin smoking side effects, you'll find a lot more, I just felt this one most answered your question.
