Email is stored on a "mail server". Email is just a text file, sometimes with other files embedded in it (like a picture). There are different interfaces (what the user sees) into a mail server.

Yahoo mail, G mail, hotmail and others offer what is known as an HTML front end to their email service. For those, your actual email files are stored there and viewed there.

If you use the email from your service provider using post office protocol (POP), you can set it so that the email actually comes to your PC and is deleted off the mail server when you copy it off.

It's a relatively simple process, suggest you look up email on wikipedia for all the gory details.

In an email address, the part after the "@" is a domain name. The domain has to have a server to handle the email. The emails are stored in the server computer until you download them to your computer.
