It takes character and a strong moral constitution and Integrity to be able to stand alone against opposition. In a crowd we gain strength and courage becasue we can't be singled out AS EASILY and have the group to back them up in tough and dangerous times . Like the saying goes "Strength in Numbers".

There's less chance of being harmed when you're with a crowd; safety in numbers. Being singled out opens you up to attack from the kind of people who as you just said, are made bold by being part of a crowd.

Fear of being alone against others does not make a person a coward.
Only failing to act, when you can, in the way you believe to be right in any situation makes you a coward.
It is easier to act in the right way when your belief conforms to that of the masses, and to conform to the masses when your actual belief is otherwise is the most cowardly human choice.

A lot of people are cowards. They hide behind the appearance of a bloated ego. They appear to be overly confident, all the nerve in the world. The truth is it's an act & any pin prick to their balloon ego will deflate it. A lot of people find safety in numbers. They talk pretty tough when they travel in packs like wolves but single them out, stand up to them & they cower.
I have a pretty small ego. I don't have to drive a big fancy car, I don't puff up my chest & strut around. I spent most of my life with low self-esteem, it's something I still battle with but I'm learning to like myself. I'm realizing I'm much stronger than I thought. I'm an introvert & certainly not the most outgoing person. I tend to be independent. I am close to a few people. I don't spread myself thin. I don't hide in a crowd. I don't put on an act. I'm very straightforward, honest. I am not afraid to be who I am & it matters little to me whether people like it or not. Sure it's great to be understood & accepted but I'm realistic enough to know there are people who will find me strange & I'm ok with that. I don't have to be like everyone else. I'd rather stand out than fit in.
I am the most brave person I know. Other people hide behind their acts, hide in alcohol or drugs, hide in hundreds of friends. People get really good at hiding. They are afraid of being found out. Afraid of not fitting in, not being cool, not being accepted. Terrified to admit that they are vulnerable. I admit my vulnerability. I wear it on my sleeve. I paint it on canvas & sell it to strangers. I write songs about it & get up on stage & perform it for an audience. I openly admit my flaws, my fears, my dreams. I am strong enough to say when I'm weak. I am brave enough to face my fears & go after my dreams.
I used to think I was a coward because I was so nervous, so afraid. Then I realized bravery wasn't the absence of fear. It's feeling the fear, but not letting it stop you. It's feeling the fear but getting up on stage anyway. Getting out of your comfort zone. I'm so far out of my comfort zone now I'm practically freefalling. But it's cool.
I'm happy.
Ok I'm totally babbling! Tee hee! But the short answer is that yes most people are cowards, but there are those who are brave enough to be authentic, to show the world who they really are, whatever the consequences.

They have terms for it in psychology....basically, we have an anonymous identity when in a crowd, eg/ when watching a football game, so we gain more confidence.

There's another word for this type of cowardice. It's called intelligence. Do you have a sign on your jaw that says "Beat me Up"?
