Adolf Hitler was the leader of the Nazi government. As such, he was directly responsible for one of the greatest economic turn arounds the world has seen. He managed to restore Germany's economy and give her people pride in their nation again.
However, that's where his greatness ends. He was an unstable maniac with a racist ideology. He began a "final solution" for the perceived jewish problem. This solution was a deliberate and methodical attempt at genocide. This is now know as the Holocaust. Millions of people were killed in the name of racial purity.
Also, in the name of gaining "living space" Hitler annexed Austria and Czechaslovakia. The Austrians were happy to join Germany, but the Czechs were not. Unfortunately, nobody was in a position to do anything about it. So instead, they tried to appease Hitler by saying he could keep his annexed territory, but only if he promised to expand no further.
He lied, and later invaded Poland, triggering World War 2. He continued his racist purges, setting out to eliminate the Jews, Gypsies, and the Russians. Also, he brutalized and abused the territories he conqered. Very often slave labor was used for infrastructure and military construction. And these slaves were maltreated to a degree unseen to that time. It did not even matter how many of them died, they were simply replaced.
Then, after all his grand designs for world domination had fallen apart and it was obvious Germany was going to lose, he decided to fight to the bitter end, because "The German people are weak, and do not deserve to live". He was not able to win the war he started, so he blamed the very people that he had used to start the war. Then, in a final act of cowardice, he killed himself instead of facing the end.
He was a monster, but he was a gifted monster. He was able to attain a position of absolute power from nothing. But once he had that power, his insability became magnified and he led Germany down the darkest path in it's entire history.
I don't know how old you are, but I'm guessing that if your parents really believe he was the greatest man on earth, they were either die hard Nazis, or your grand parents were and passed it down.
I am sorry that these things are upsetting to you, but the simple truth is that you've been misled. I have slightly broader view than many do today of Adolf Hitler. I know he was a good politician, and he did a lot of good for Germany early in his career. But, it is all over shadowed by the horrible things he ordered into being later.
I wish you luck reconciling with this.

After WW1, the Treaty of Versailles focused on punishing the industrial capability of Germany. This resulted in very high unemployment, loss of national prestige and it demoralized the once great German people.
In the absence of leadership from German politicians, Adolf Hitler took advantage of this chaos by telling the people to fight back against the enemies of the "Third Reich". In the absence of any substantial opposition to challenge the "Aryan" mythos, the desperate people followed the only one who was leading.
Hitler led.. and the people followed.
Prior to the war, he was able to restore confidence, power and re-create an industrial superpower in a short time. This was appealing to Germans and they, and the world, missed clear signs that a madman was controlling everything.

Maybe you should Google the words:
Nazi,
holocaust,
World War 2,
Auschwitz-Berkenau,
Dachau,
Anne Frank,
Nuremberg trials,
Nazi Genocide,
and anything else that comes to mind about World War II.
There are web-sites, books, videos, and DVDs available from around the world for you to see and read.
It sounds like you're doing the right thing finding out the truth for yourself.
Adolf Hitler's dictatorial rule of Germany, which led to the deaths of millions in World War II, has placed him among history's most hated villains.

Well lets see,I am American, born here but my grandmother was 100% English,She came here around the time Hitler invaded Poland.I actually have a letter from my great grandmother describing the events...History is not lying about the Holocaust and all the cruel intentions of men...I myself believe Hitler was a great man yet I think he went crazy trying to take over the world...If he had left the command with his generals he quite possibly could have been the ruler of Europe...Instead he left his armies to thin and gave little support to them...I think if he would have used the countries around him for resources to fuel his war machine than he would have been to strong for any other country...Remember America was not in the war until japan bombed pearl harbor...If for not that event,we would have stayed out of the war allot longer and possibly given him a better chance at uniting his forces,,I am sure Hitler would have ruled Europe for decades

Hitler was a megalomaniac, bent on world domination and destruction and/or enslavement of any race - Jews, Slavs etc - or type of people - homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses, those with mental problems - that he thought 'inferior' to the great (fictitious) tAryan race. But to suggest that he sought to unite 'the German states', as one answer does, shows a woeful ignorance of history. Germany was united long before Hitler by Count Otto von Bismark

Adolf Hitler, It is true that he tried to unite the Germanic states and did denounce the treaty of Versailles (treaty for the ending of WWI), he also brought Germany out of the Great Depression. But what he is recognized for is that of all the people of the 20th century, he did more destruction to his country and to other countries. Furthermore, he tortured and mutilated some 6 million Jewish people just because he thought them inferior. Finally, he enslaved many people to work in harsh conditions until they could not work any longer, whereas; they were terminated.
Of the 20th century there are three people that are known for their mass murders, Hitler, Stalin, and Chairman Mao.

He was a mass murderer who tried to wipe the Jews off the face of the earth. He called it "extermination." He developed concentration camps where over SIX MILLION Jews and others were tortured, starved, and finally executed by firing squads, hangings, gas chambers, and ovens. He was a monster beyond even the most science fiction mind could create. If your parents taught you he was the greatest man who ever lived, they were either ignorant of the truth or sick.
Chow!!

Eddie Mabo, (a Torres Strait Islander man prominent in the fight for land rights in the Australian legal system) would seem an odd non-de-plume for someone raised in a small German town. Hence I conclude you are full of zhit.

Troll alert! I lived in Germany for 2 years, and Hitler is definitely not being promoted as anyone's hero anymore.
P.S.-- It has been against the law in Germany for many years now to deny the Holocaust wrought by Hitler and his Third Reich. Revisionist history is not tolerated there anymore.
