I always read the news headlines online for here, Glasgow Scotland everyday to keep up with whats going on. Someone has been stabbed, a teen died from taking ecstacy, and what are the main headlines??? A man had blue paint poured over him in an unprovoked attack, jeez! whats the BIG news where you are today?

I live in London and our headlines are just as crazy at yours - but I read once while I was doing a sociology A Level that the main function of news organisations is to constantly provide people with bad or shocking news in order to keep their own ratings high. It makes sense though, when you think about it.

My favorite "news" story in this regard occurred several months ago on a local TV channel. At the top of the hour one of the "news" people came on to announce the compelling headline news story that is supposed to keep us on the edge of our seat and prevent us from changing the channel during the commercial to follow. He stated, "Why pancakes may be bad for you. Coming up next."

Right-wing and left wing are class distinctions. The right-wing is the wealthy rentiers and business owners. The left-wing is the working class. The media is owned and controlled by the right-wing.

This is why it is often said that the right-wing consists of the super-rich and the super-stupid. The policies of the super-rich are designed to further enrich themselves. The problem they have is that they are too few in number to promote those policies. They need a constituency of non-rich members who will support them. Hence they use their media to inflict O'Reilly, Hannity, Limbaugh etc. upon the public to manufacture a constituency of the super-stupid. The super-stupid being those people who are victims themselves of right-wing policies yet fervently support right-wing candidates.

lol. I know what you mean. I didn't see our news headlines for today. But one time when our hockey team made the playoffs that was the main headline, never mind that women in city were getting assaulted in their bedrooms by some intruder.
