Alot of poorer countries accepted islam proably because they did not have the money to sustain another religion (christianity has alot of gold in it, also alot of people who demand salaries). But you may think a country under islamic rule is a pathetic country? wrong, the Ottoman empire beat all the european christian countries in the crusades (eventually). islamic countries have come close to totally defeating Europe many times. So it is not islam that makes them third world, its prejudice.

Because the criteria for rating countries as 1st or 3rd world is based on scientific, technological, economic and material development, not on spiritual development.
All Islamic countries have highly advanced cultures rooted in spiritual development.
Prior to colonization, the countries you call Islamic countries were recognized as being among the wealthiest and most advanced in the world.
Just look at Islamic literature, Islamic architecture, Islamic scholars, poets and writers. Look at the Seven Wonders of the World and see how many of them are in Islamic or 3rd world countries. How many of those wonders are in, or can be replicated in today's 1st world countries?
The colonial powers went into those countries, not to develop them, but to loot, plunder and take control of the wealth that those countries had, similar to what is happening in Iraq right now with the struggle for control of the oil.
After they had taken all they could get, the colonials left and when they left, they left behind a ravaged country, a country that had to start rebuilding, virtually from scratch.
Fortunately for the people of those countries, they are highly advanced spiritually and the title 3rd world country does not mean a great deal to them. They know that they are a 1st world country when it comes to spiritual development. Im referring to the ordinary people, not fanatics, fundamentalists or terrorists.
Perhaps you can add to your question and ask whether so called 1st world countries as spiritually advanced as 3rd world countries.

Don't know why but....... if you know your History, then you'll notice that those countries where the top-intellectual countries when we Western Guys were still crushing each other's skull with swords.
That means when we were trying to understand the Universe with religion-based arguments... they were trying to solve it with a scientific approach.
History is no easy topic.
But for all I've understood: it's part of a reminiscent cycle.
Which means the West won't rule the World forever.
Take a minute to think about the fact that almost ALL of the things that made Western countries so strong were first discovered by Muslims (Mathematics, Astronomy, Medicine, etc...)
If the NASA has ever been given the opportunity to send space-probes all around the Solar System... we should thank the Muslims who discovered the right theorems while we Western Dudes were dealing with the Inquisition that would burn anyone who would be "fool enough" to pretend that Planet Earth was NOT the center of the Universe....... and, even more, ... that it wasn't flat !!!
Should I remind you of all those people who were "burnt in the name of God" just because they knew how to cure their neighbor's diarrhea with some plants picked in the woods ?
Those were charged with "Sorcery" !!!
Nowadays, we call them 'Doctors' and rush into their place as soon as we don't feel alright..... hoping they'll find something to ease our pain.

Malaysia was third world, but is now considered a first world nation. Oman was third world but it too is now considered first world. Kosovo, when it was part of Yugoslavia was considered Second World (part of the Soviet Bloc) but can now be considered third world because of the fighting that has taken place in the 1990's.
