Doulas are WONDERFUL!! Especially for the mother who is interested in having a natural birth. A doula does not deliver a baby, her role is to assist the mother and if need be, be her advocate in childbirth. She uses a variety of techniques to help you relax and to help you through the roller coaster ride of childbirth. A doula does not take over the role of the father if he is there, but rather encourages dad to rub the mother's back and shows him ways to help her. Often, a man finds it is a relief to have someone show him how to help!
If you are considering natural childbirth, look into a doula!

A doula is someone who is there to aid you and you partner during the labor and birth process. She has experience in birthing usually herself and others and can bring experience, calmness and knowledge to help you with labor and birth. In such ways as providing info on labor positions, massage and really just helping both mother and partner with emotional support if needed. She also provides a resource by being not so emotionally involved, so that when something serious or serious to you (as defined by previous conversations between your doula and you) comes up she can bring these things to your attention so that you can be more cognizant of the decisions you are making. For our first child, we hired a doula, mainly because I got the feeling my husband was uncomfortable and unsure of himself and would feel better with someone there to help him (we we're planning a natural birth). In the end we didn't really use her because I had the baby earlier than anyone expected, including my doctor.

They are about £300-£400.
They support the mother (and sometimes father) through the whole birthing experience. Usually doula's are brought in earlier in the pregnancy to help the mother and put her mind at rest. She's a person that knows everything about pregnancy and will answer any questions the parents have. She will be the birth partner if that's what is wanted, otherwise she will be there to support before, during and after the whole birthing thing.

A few cover Doula's and childbirth classes are seen as a non-medical necessity for insurance to cover

They mother the mother.
It is a 'midwife' without those papers, nor do they want to have that. There are certified Doula's. Labor support specialist, not the clinical kind but spiritual, emotional and physical. Information, suggestions to make it more comfortable. Help finding non-medical pain relief (massage, aromatherapy). Breastfeeding preparation. Record keeping of the birth.

Doula's are people, usually women, who work with you during and shortly after your pregnancy. They offer help throughout your pregnancy with getting you ready for delivery. They also help in the delivery room if you don't have a partner or feel you would like someone else in the room. They use to be called mid-wives I believe. If you are interested in more informaiton you might want to contact your local WIC office or may if you have a birth to three program in your area or Right From The Start

I think it is a person that the parents to be employ to help the mother on her way to parenthood, they are with her when she gives birth and helps out with the baby after the birth too. Its very expensive.
