"Most artists, whether in music, literature, painting, or what not, are shopkeepers in disguise. They hide their shop as much as they can, and keep pretending that it does not exist, but they are essentially shopkeepers and nothing else."

I disagree. I CREATE art, I allow others to display and sell it. My "shop" is a bedroom. I can call it my studio, but I do not sell out of my house. Rather than pretending it does not exist, I discuss it often. A shopkeeper can sell anything, and must be a business person, not an artist.

Am an artist myself & I specialize in watercolor.

You actually have a very good point when you said "Most artists, whether in music, literature, painting, or what not, are shopkeepers in disguise." Artists should, in fact, welcome the idea of the shopkeeeper status. Their paintings, songs or books being their products and the artists themselves a shopkeeper selling their wares.

"They hide their shop as much as they can, and keep pretending that it does not exist, but they are essentially shopkeepers and nothing else." Hiding entails insecurity and a closed mind. Some artists are well aware that they should sell their wares and hiding behind ignorance would defeat the purpose. Artists are all of these: creator of new things/ideas, maker of both beautiful & ugly, a salesman and a shop owner/keeper. And these are things to be proud of.

If you mean business people or sellers-then yes-they are selling their ideas, their feelings and to make a living, their work! Whether it be to a gallery,to have it sold again,or to patrons....I work fulltime in the art field (paintings of exotic and endangered animals, large scale tile sculpture) if I wasn't out there pounding the streets for shows and such, where would I get the next idea, sculpture show, place to show or chance to create? I want the next chance in order to continue to work- even if its not for much profit-because I love what I do and hope others "see" something in my work or because of it.....
