According to my dictionary 'theory' is a derivative of 'theorem' which means 'a proposition never disproved'. Theory's definition is : an explanation or system of anything; an exposition of the abstract principles of a science or art; speculation as opposed to proof; a hypothesis; reasoned expectation as opposed to practice.
Derived from the Greek word theorema -theoreein meaning to view. Theaesthai ; to see.
An example of the use of theory would be, for example, in the design of an aeroplane. When the plan is drawn the designer knows that the plane should fly but until built does not know that it will except, of course, 'in theory'. When the plane does eventually fly it is then said to fly 'in practice'.

theory is what creationists like to say about evolution; and that seems to carry weight with some people. As used in science, theory does not mean the same thing as it does in everyday life. A theory is not a guess, hunch, hypothesis, or speculation — it's much more full-blown, and the word is by no means a pejorative term. A theory is built upon one or more hypotheses, and upon evidence.

Theory comes from the Greek word "teorÃa" that means contemplation, study. An abstraction of this meaning is "speculative knowledge aisled from reality"
