Should I have a computer put together at a store or should I just buy a name brand. Also any recommended specs. I use a few programs, but no games.

I think in general it's cheaper to get a package deal, look for a sale, or get it from dell or ebay. If you have one built, you need to buy the software, and that's where you'll spend a lot of money. The OS might cost quite a bit, plus all the hardware for the comp..just my opinion.

I would get a brand name unless your local store is well respected.

Core 2 Duo (whatever you can afford)
7200rpm drive, 16+mb cache
1gb or more ram
Vista home premium (maybe install XP for now)
video card compatible with vista
dvd dual layer
high quality keyboard and mouse (wireless?)
a very nice screen - I like a rotating screen for word processing

All this is pretty common now. Dell, HP, Sony, all the brand names are pretty equivilent

I used a computer that was built at the store.
The advantage is that you can change the inside as you like whenever there's something new. No problem with that.
You may buy a built computer.

email me my dad builds them for a living. He gets good deals on parts and he can build one for you. You can tell him how much you want to spend and he will build it. He just built one for me with a new intel core 2 duo! Its better to build one so you can upgrade it yourself after the hardware is obsolete!
