This is from the site, Japan for Backpackers & Solo Japan Travelers http://www.solotravel.org/japan-solo-travel.htm

Japan can be quite a daunting and overwhelming country to arrive into but that's what makes it so exciting! It is important to be open-minded and as outgoing as possible to take on the hustle and bustle, all the new technologies and mod-con's mixed with the traditional old-fashioned Japanese culture, it's hard to get a grasp on the possibility that people can live in the two worlds at the same time.

Here is another backpackers site, Japan backpackers' hostel network. http://jp_backpackers.at.infoseek.co.jp/en_top.html

I think you will find what you are looking for in these sites.

Have fun and good luck.

You could also check out my site. http://www.japan.survival-links.com for some useful info on Japan.

Read Allen Booth's "The Roads to Sata" and Basho's "The Narrow Road to the Deep North" before you go. As a matter of fact, Basho's exact route is now a hiking trail. It's like Japan's Appalachian or Trans-Canada Trail. I hope to do it myself one of these days.

Don't forget your medications. If you forget to take them, you'll lose your mind along the way. haha Just joking.

A good sterdy backpack, money, camera, a map, a phone, enough clothes, and don't forget your toothbrush.

Japanese people are extremely polite and crime is minimal. Please do not be rude and when you speak to them in English, must be slow, if they do not understand you, they will not dare to talk to you.
