The concept of the three powers was created in the age of Enlightenment: they are the executive, the legislative, and the judiciary, as defined by Montesquieu in the 18th C. The expression "fourth power" was first used at the end of the 18th C in the US about the press.
There is now, according to some sociologists, a "fifth power", that represented by Internet users (such as us...) inventing a new form of democratic debate and action.

The branches were meant to be equal through checks and balances. The executive, legislative and judiciary.

I always thought they were the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial Branches, in no particular order.
