I did science A levels in the early 60s and we had to change from Imperial to Metric halfway through - it was hell remembering but a LOT easier to do the calculations (try working in foot poundals and see what I mean!). I seem to remember that around the same time they began to dual label things with pounds and kilos. It only became mandatory to use only kilos a relatively few years ago - perhaps the early 90s.

Too soon. They should leave weights and measures alone. I object to the government trying to integrate us into european ways. Whenever I go into a shop or supermarket I always ask fior goods by the pound rather than in grammes.

A friend of mine went into a shop just after the conversions. "Can I have five pounds of potatoes please?" She asked.
"I'm sorry." Said the shopkeeper, "They're kilos now."
"Oh," She replied, a little confused. "Well, can I have five pounds of kilos then?"
