I live in a redneck community. There are a lot of back country roads that are not paved or it may take a long time before the snow plows can come in. It's almost a neccessity to have 4-wheel drive if you are going to live out in the boonies.

1. the effect of mankind on global warming is not really known, as we don't have enough long-term data to substantiate it, even though quite a few scientists claim there is - but they were wrong before. 2. that said, it is not a bad idea to reduce emissions and live in cleaner air and reduce the money going to oil companies and some countries that you would not want to live in. 3. the problem is not SUVs or pick-up trucks - it is whether is suits the real driving needs. If one is driving a Hummer just as a commuter it is wasteful. If the same hummer is carrying a big load in rough terrain, than it fits the need. And a big suburban filled with 8 people is less wasteful and causes less congestion than 8 tiny, efficient cars. In fact, even if three people are in the suburban it is more efficient than three tiny cars. Of course, you seldom see car pools - that is the cause of excessive congestion and emissions. 4. Hybrids are just a buzz to "feel good" - they are not extremely efficient, they are much more complex to build (therefore require more materials and more energy) and the batteries will have to be taken care of later. Diesel gives almost the same performance as Hybrids and they are much simpler and don't have all that baggage. 5. I believe that much more CO2 is produced because of huge deforestation than by cars. Plant trees - that should care care of the CO2 - and make a nicer place to live in as well.

I have a friend who put these huge tires on his rather nice Avalanche. So big, the truck really needs a ladder now. Now this question leaves me to ponder is he a hillbilly/redneck/hick... It wasn't a necessity either.

Why do black people like to drive low rider cars? Why do old white dudes like Corvettes? That was a dumb question. People that really enjoy the true mechanics of vehicles, their capacity for extreme speed, hight, only we understand this concept. I am NOT a redneck, but I like big trucks. But I also grew up in the country, and like someone said earlier, it started out as a necessity, but then more options came out to make that necessity cool.

They drive POS noisy polluting pickup trucks in the city which are horrible in the snow (just fishtail and get stuck) because they are angry insecure sociopathic morons who love to annoy others and hate "Yuppies" (i.e. people who make them feel like Simpleton idiots)
