for you to know the freshness date period of it. Unlike other food, you can determined if it's already expired, eg. cookies, you know it's freshness through texture. if it's still cruchy, still fresh. for food, through it's smell and taste. for sour creamm you cannot determine if you will jsut base it on smell or taste, taste and smell would still be the same, unless you're going to store it for 10years and got molds.

It seems that your question is predicated on the assumption that sour cream is nothing more than cream that has gone "sour" or spoiled, but this is not the case. Sour cream is made of heavy cream that contains lactic acid and/or specific types of bacteria which cause it to become sour. These bacteria are not harmful, at least in the amounts found in "unexpired" sour cream, but there are other types of bacteria that will inhabit sour cream which are harmful. That, and sour cream can mold. Finally, sour cream can separate into its constituent parts of fats, milk solids, and watery whey. While this will almost always happen after you take some spoonfuls out of a container, it can also happen after some time has elapsed, even unopened. This becomes a taste/palate/appearance issue more than a food safety one.

Thus-an expiration date on sour cream.

There are expiration dates on all dairy products and others that are perishable. You may purchase products up to the shelf date and they are guaranteed to be ok for up to 7 days after the date.
If you shop, you should look for the best date.that is latest date stamped on the label to assure a longer shelf life at home unless you know you will use all of the product within a few days of purchase. Ususally the dairy clerks rotate the products and place the newer ones in the back and move the older items up front..check it out and get the best and longest use from the product!

Most definetly. If you aren't careful about the expiration date you can end up with food poisioning and believe me food poisioning from milk products is about the worst kind there is, be really careful.
