WD40 is way over rated as a penetrant to loosen rust. It is more of a lubricant. As one other answered use a good penetrating oil preferably Kroil if you can get it. And as mentioned tap it then apply the penetrant. Also if you want aviod ruining the screw slot use the old bit and brace with a screwdriver attached to get the needed pressure on the screw witout slipping off. I rebuilt an old player piano and this method worked very very well for me.

There are a variety of quite effective methods but the best one depends upon what is being screwed. Most mechanics with a torch (propane, acetylene, methane w/ or w/o Oxygen) would heat the screw if the material it was embedded in wouldn't be harmed. If that material was metal but painted, heat would ruin the finish. Then I'd use a variety of penetrates, all petroleum based, such as WD40, but Liquid Wrench is better. If the screw was in wood, saturating the wood with steam or water would help. Sometimes fitting the matching screwdriver into the screw's slot and hammering the handle end will help. If the screw slot is gone, there are tap drills that one drills a hole into the screw shaft, and then twists the tap in as the grooves go counter clockwise and that provides sufficient leverage to twist the screw out. Finally, one can drill from the bottom to reach the screw and hammer its point with an appropriately sized nail set or regular nail whose point has first been hammered flat.

If all the above methods fail they make an impact tool that will loosen the screw. You need that plus a hammer.

The best method is heat. If that is not possible a rust buster that you can get from NAPA. The stuff that works best is over $20 a can. It all depends on how badly you want to loosen it. Heat is always my number one choice.

put the screwdriver into the screw head ..and then give it a sharp tap with a hammer ..it might take two or three hits but it normally breaks the rust seal ..when i say hit it i mean straight at it ..not trying to undo it dont use a wooden handled screwdriver as it will split
